Rested Well sleep summary on iPhone
◐

Actionable

Every morning you get one specific change to make tonight. Rested Well tracks your sleep debt and how regular your bedtime is, so you can fix your sleep and reclaim the nights you’ve missed.

◔

Explained

Every score is broken into four named parts, each with its weight, so you can see how the number was reached. Sleep and wake are scored with Cole–Kripke and Webster rescoring — published actigraphy methods, not a guess.

Private

No account. No server. Your nights and any audio are stored on your iPhone and never uploaded — there is nowhere to upload them to. Export a file you own whenever you like.

What a night with Rested Well looks like

Put the phone on the mattress, press Start

It works with the screen locked, all night. Plug it in, set it beside your pillow, screen up. Movement and sound are folded into one score per minute as they happen, so a whole night costs almost nothing in storage.

A smart alarm with a hard backstop

Choose a wake window and it looks for a lighter moment inside it. Whatever the sensors say, the alarm you set fires on time — even if iOS has put the app to sleep.

Sounds you can mix

Layer up to three — real recordings of rain, surf, a stream, wind, a campfire — set a volume each, and a fade-out timer. Pick a mix at bedtime and it keeps playing while your night is tracked.

The morning after, in plain words

How long it took to fall asleep, how often you woke, how loud the room was, whether you snored — each measured against your own recent nights, never against a lab average you didn’t sleep in.

Trends that lead with regularity

How consistent your bedtime is predicts how you feel at least as well as how long you slept — and it’s the one you can change tonight. A calendar, a streak, and your sleep debt, without a leaderboard.

Apple Health, both ways

Save your nights to Apple Health. If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, Rested Well reads the sleep stages it recorded and shows them right alongside your night.

Questions

What is Rested Well?

Rested Well is a sleep tracker app for iPhone, made by James Westergren. Put your phone on the mattress beside your pillow and it tracks your night from movement and sound: how long you took to fall asleep, how often you woke, how restless you were and whether you snored. Every morning it suggests one change to make tonight, and it tracks your sleep debt and bedtime regularity so you can fix your sleep schedule and catch up on missed sleep.

Is Rested Well the same as RestWell or Rested?

No. Rested Well (two words) is its own iPhone app, made by independent developer James Westergren. It is not related to RestWell (restwell.app), the “Rested” apps on the App Store (such as Rested - Better Sleep or Rested: Sleep & Energy Tracker), the Rested app for sleep consultants, or the DIOME Rested supplement. The official app is Rested Well on the App Store, and this site, restedwell.jawser.com, is its official website.

Does Rested Well work with Apple Watch?

Yes, through Apple Health. You don’t need a Watch; your iPhone on the mattress tracks the night on its own. If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, Rested Well reads the sleep stages your Watch recorded from Apple Health and shows them with your night. Rested Well also saves the nights it tracks to Apple Health.

How is Rested Well different from Sleep Cycle or AutoSleep?

AutoSleep needs an Apple Watch. Rested Well doesn’t: your iPhone is enough, and a Watch is a bonus. Sleep Cycle has you put your phone on the nightstand. Rested Well goes on the mattress beside your pillow, where it can feel every toss and turn. Rested Well also tells you one thing to change tonight, tracks your sleep debt, and needs no account: your nights stay on your iPhone and in Apple Health.

Where does the phone go?

On the mattress, beside your pillow, screen up, plugged in. On the same person and the same night, a phone on the mattress counted 15 awakenings; a phone on the nightstand counted none. The mattress is the difference between an app that works and one that doesn’t.

Does it work with the screen locked?

Yes. Tracking runs all night with the screen off. Keep the phone plugged in; a night of tracking is the one thing that should not be interrupted by a flat battery.

Does it record me?

The microphone listens for movement, snoring and room noise. Short clips of snoring are kept on your phone so you can hear them, and are deleted after a week. Nothing is ever uploaded; there is no server to upload to. You can turn audio off and track by movement alone.

Is it a medical device?

No. Rested Well is a consumer app that measures movement and sound. It reports what it heard — for example how many pauses in breathing it noticed — but it does not diagnose anything, and it says so wherever a number could be mistaken for a diagnosis.

Can I take my data with me?

Settings → Your data → Export writes every night to a file you own, in a format that explains itself, so it stays readable long after the app is gone.
